About the New Era Student-Athlete Scholarship

The New Era Student-Athlete Scholarship was created in 2012 to recognize deserving high school student-athletes who excel not only in their respective athletic endeavor(s) but in the classroom as well. New Era wants to empower the next generation of athletes and leaders. Tell us what makes you unique, how your express yourself and show your individuality. In addition to success on the field of play and in the classroom, the New Era Student-Athlete Scholarship seeks individuals who take part in extra-curricular activities including but not limited to community outreach, student government, theatre, etc.

About the Award

Through the generous support of New Era, a $2,500 grant will be awarded annually to a deserving male and female high school student-athlete.

Scholarship Criteria / Candidates Must:

  • Be a graduating senior in the year of the application;
  • Be admitted to an accredited college or university of their choice (check will be officially awarded after proper notification of enrollment is received through the college / university);
  • Reside in the greater Western New York region;
  • Write an essay in which the applicant, offers insight into his / her self-expression, creativity and individuality through activities, hobbies, interest, etc. Tell us what makes you, your lifestyle and your passions unique;
  • Complete the application, including submission of at least two letters of recommendation

About the Greater Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame

Incorporated as a non-profit organization, the Greater Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame group began meeting regularly in 1991, putting together plans for an inaugural induction dinner, creating a nomination form, distributing them to Western New York sports fans, tabulating results and announcing the first class of 11. This community’s sports hall of fame is one of our nation’s most unique since its scope is all encompassing. Our honorees live, have lived and worked in Western New York. They are men and women who have contributed to the welfare of sports in Greater Buffalo by performance, time, effort and/or financial support whether that sport be amateur or professional.

New Era 2017 Winners

Madison (Maddie) Klidonas, a three-sport athlete from Niagara Wheatfield HS, and Ronald Lott III, also a three-sport star, out of Portville Central HS.

Madison Kiidonas

Klidonas played four years of varsity softball and basketball at Niagara Wheatfield in addition to competing for two seasons on the volleyball team. She captained all three sports and was named the WIVB Channel 4 Scholar Athlete of the Month in March of 2017. She enjoyed her most successful season on the softball diamond in 2016 when she was named to the All-WNY First Team at shortstop and received 4th Team All-State recognition. During that campaign, she batted .460 with 11 extra base hits and 22 RBI.

Maddie completed her high school career ranking 17th out of 302 students with a 96.936 GPA. She plans to attend St. John Fisher College and major in English Education.

Ronald Lott III

Lott earned four letters in football and basketball and was a team captain in both those sports, plus baseball, where he received two letters on the diamond. Ron ranked third in his class of 71 with a 99% cumulative GPA and will attend Houghton College in the fall to study Biochemistry in the Pre-Med track. A two-time All-Western New York Scholar Athlete, Lott earned second team all-Western New York football kudos on defense and was a member of the Class DD football champions. Off the playing fields, the Portville product placed first at the Alfred State Science Fair, was president of his high school class and received commendations for his excellence in Science from Senator Catherine Young and Congressman Tom Reed.

Lott also received the annual Bob Davies-Lou Foy Memorial Big 30 Scholar-Athlete Award. The award is presented annually to a student for Academic Performance and school citizenship in addition to athletic participation.

Each student-athlete receives a one-year award of $2,500.00.
