Angela Coniglio

Angela Coniglio

When they were youngsters, Angela’s older brother got into a little bit of trouble for shooting pucks against the garage door. If he still wanted to play, he’d need a quick solution. That quick solution was his seven-year old sister, whom he put in front of the door to stop pucks. That would be the beginning of an incredible career in sports for Angela Coniglio of Amherst, New York.
Within a couple of years, Angela was playing goalie for several Wheatfield Blades all-boys ice hockey house and travel teams. This would continue into her high school years as goalie for the Amherst Central High School Boys’ Club Hockey team.

In 1984, with Amherst winning the league hockey championship, Angela was named MVP.

Her sports career continued at Amherst earning varsity letters in softball, field hockey, basketball, and soccer, being named captain of both the field hockey and basketball teams. In addition to being named to the ECIC Division II all-star team in soccer, she set a school record with 27 goals scored her senior year.

After Amherst, Angela continued at Nazareth College from 1984 to 1987 where she played both soccer and softball. Her main sport was soccer and she set school records for most career assists with 31 while scoring 42 career goals, graduating as the number two all-time scorer with 115 points and leading the team to four consecutive winning seasons and a 50-22-5 overall record. In 1985 she led the Golden Flyers in scoring with 18 goals and six assists. Her 14 assists in 1986 was also a school record. Angela was a three-year starter in the outfield for Nazareth softball, helping the team to a 28-7-1 record.

Angela Coniglio also participated in numerous New York State Empire State Games, winning medals 11 years apart. Her first soccer medal came in the 1984 games for the Western Scholastic Women’s team capturing silver and her second a bronze for the Central Open Women’s team in the 1995 games.

Angela Coniglio passed away at the young age of 30, April 29, 1996. Along with her induction into the Greater Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame, Angela was posthumously inducted into both the Nazareth College and the Amherst High School Athletes Halls of Fame. Angela was an advocate for women’s sports, and in her memory, a scholarship is given annually to deserving Amherst High School women. Upon request, the Coniglio family donates scholarship money to Angela’s many cousins so they can pursue their academic interests in college.
