John Murphy

A native of Lockport, NY, John Murphy has lived the dream of countless sports fans in Western New York – documenting the action and news for our community’s beloved college and professional sports teams.
He graduated from the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University, and his play-by-play experience began as a high school football announcer at WLVL radio in Lockport.
He became a regular voice on radios across WNY as the host of “One on One Sports” on WBEN-AM. In addition to his nightly radio show, Murphy could be heard calling play-by-action for the Buffalo Bisons, Niagara University and Canisius College basketball, and UB football.
In 1984, Murphy joined the Buffalo Bills broadcast team as the color analyst, working alongside the legendary Van Miller. When Miller retired after the 2003 season, Murphy was named the play-by-play voice of the Buffalo Bills, a position he held until 2023.
In addition to his work behind the mic, Murphy became a familiar face in front of the camera, serving as a sportscaster and then Sports Director, first at WKBW-TV and later at WIVB-TV. He also worked for the Buffalo Bills for 12-years as host of “The John Murphy Show” and “One Bills Live.”
Murphy has won numerous awards during his career, including a citation from the Associated Press of New York State for Best Sports Coverage for WBEN Radio, Artvoice “Best Sportscaster,” and Buffalo Spree “Best Broadcast Reporter.”
In 2019, John Murphy was inducted into the Buffalo Broadcasters Association’s Hall of Fame. He was presented with the Dick Gallagher Legacy Award from the Greater Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame in 2022, and last year he was inducted into the NYS Broadcast Hall of Fame
